What am I supposed to do when

The best part of me was always you

And what am I supposed to say

When I’m all chocked up that you’re ok

Cause when a heart breaks no it don’t breakeven

/ / /

I got the call later in the evening. She was so happy, but with each word she spoke I felt my heart begin to break.

“She said she’ll give me a chance! Can you believe it Tay? We’re finally together!” those words, my worst nightmare coming true, continued to echo over and over in my head. I thought I had accepted the fact that Selena was going to get with Demi sooner or later. Maybe I did but it didn’t lessen the blow any. I still felt it. All of it. Each and every piece of my heart shattering as she continued talking. I was sure I would die, but I’m still alive, just barely breathing though.

“That’s great Sel. I’m happy for you.” I should’ve told her then and there, at least she would know then, and maybe I would’ve had a chance with her.

She’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar

My phone continues to ring madly next to me, but I put it on silent and pull my guitar into my lap.

“She looks at me

I fake a smile so she won’t see

That I want and I’m needing

Everything that we should be.”

I softly sang over the droplets of rain hitting my balcony’s doors.

                “I’ll bet she’s beautiful

That girl she talks about

And she’s got everything that I have to live without.”

“She talks to me

I laugh cause it’s so damn funny

That I can’t even see

Anyone when she’s with me.”

I felt the tears begin to well up in my eyes, making my vision blurry.

“She says she’s so in love

She’s finally got it right

I wonder if she knows she’s all I think about at night.”

“She’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar

The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star

She’s the song in the car I keep singing, don’t know why I do.”

The tears spill over the edges of my eyes and fall one by one onto my guitar.

“She walks by me

Can’t she tell that I can’t breathe?

And there she goes

So perfectly

The kind of flawless I wish I could be.”

“She’d better hold her tight

Give her all her love

Look in those beautiful eyes

And know she’s lucky cause.”

My voice is starting to go in and out as I try and control the tears that are now making it hard to play.

“She’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar

The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star

She’s the song in the car I keep singing, don’t know why I do.”

I take a moment to let out the sob that shook my body before I tried to continue.

“So I drive home alone

As I turn out the light

I’ll put her picture down and maybe

Get some sleep tonight.”

                I could stop singing any time I want, but I can’t, and I don’t know why I don’t.

“Cause she’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar

The only one who’s got enough of me to break my heart

She’s the song in the car I keep singing, don’t know why I do

She’s the time taken up

But there’s never enough

And she’s all that I need to fall into.”

My voice is even shaker now, but it’s almost over.

“She looks at me

I fake a smile so she won’t see.”

I barely got the last note out before I completely brake down and allow the waterfall of tears to pour down on my guitar like the rain that’s pouring down outside. I cry into my hands and maneuver my guitar to rest on the ground so I can lie down and cry into the pillow she had been using only hours ago.

You’re the only thing I know like the back of my hand

And I can’t breathe without you, but I have to

I cried all the tears I was capable of crying, leaving me with the sound of the rain hitting the glass, and the sound of cars sloshing through the roads. I’m not sure what time it is, or how long I’ve been laying here, staring at my wall, but when I feel small but strong arms circle around my waist, then a warm, small body press into my back, a new wave of tears spring to my eyes, and without missing a beat I begin a new wave of sobs, as I cry into the pillow Selena had occupied, while Miley holds me and cries her own silent tears behind me.

/ / /

I still have tears in my eyes when the sun goes down and a black blanket covers the L.A. sky, but Miley doesn’t mind, she stays with me. and while I can’t hardly breathe without her, I have to, because she’s the only thing I know like the back of my hand, and I wouldn’t want to see her hurt for me.

Another sob wrecks my body when my mind drifts to the feel of her touch on my arm as she moves it to drape it across her waist. Miley’s hold on me tightens and I feel her own body begin to shake with my own.

Baby I was naïve

Got lost in your eyes

And never really had a chance.

We spent 2 days. 2 whole days doing nothing but crying. We each got various texts and calls from Selena and Demi, but all went unanswered. I even got a call from my mom, and that too went unanswered until now. She just wanted to say hi, and talking to her calmed me some until she brought up Selena and that’s when I made some excuse and hung up. I was going to return Selena’s calls now, but a knock at my door made me set down my phone and go and answer it.

The object of my affections stood on the other side of the door, a frown set upon her face.

“Sel? What’s wrong?” I let her in and shut the door behind her before we sat down on the couch.

“What’s wrong? My best friend hasn’t returned any of my calls or texts in 2 days. What’s wrong with you?” I shake my head and try to put on a fake smile.

“Nothing’s wrong with me, I’ve just been busy with my music. I was at the studio and must’ve left my phone at home.” Her frown doesn’t falter, if anything it deepens.

“Don’t lie to me Taylor. I got worried and called the studio to see if you were there and they said you haven’t been here in a week.” I looked down at my hands as I play with them.

“What are you nervous about?”

“I’m not ner-“

“You’re playing with your hands, you only do that when you’re nervous.” I couldn’t help but stare at her. I never noticed I did that, and the fact that she does…it just makes me lover her even more.

“Oh.” I look back down at them and find I’m doing it again, so I quickly stop and move my eyes to the window, where the rain was running down it.

“Why are you nervous Tay?” a gentle hand finds my shoulder and it causes me to look over and find big brown eyes full of concern staring back at me.

“I just…I…I have a lot on my mind I guess.” Her hand falls to my hands that are resting on my knees, and gives them a reassuring squeeze. I’m a good listener.” When I looked into her eyes I found myself wanting to confess everything to her.

“I-I can’t tell you.” I look away and stand, making her hand falloff me. I know if I were to stay there any longer I would’ve broke down and told her everything.

“How come?” I don’t have to look at her to know she’s hurt.

“Just cause Selena. It would ruin too many things.” I cross my arms across chest and I try to keep the tears threatening to fall at bay.

“I wish you could trust me with what you’re going through.”

“I do trust you.” I turn to look at her when I say this, and that was a mistake. She must’ve seen the tears in my eyes, because she’s standing in front of me with her hands on either side of my face.

“Taylor what is it?” her eyes search mine and I know it’s only a matter of time before she figures it out.

“What guy has you this worked up?” I had to suppress a sarcastic laugh, as my eyes fall from hers to star down at our converse covered feet.

“It’s not a guy.” I mutter, but with her standing as close as she is, she heard me.

“Family problems?” I shake my head, making her pull my chin up so I’m looking her in the eyes.

“Tell me.”

“I’m in love.” I say so softly I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t’ hear me.

“Who’s’ the lucky guy?” my eyes leave hers again.

“It’s no guy.” Her hands fall from my cheeks to my shoulders.

“It’s a girl?” I don’t blame her disbelief, I’ve never shown any romantic interest in the same gender, but then again maybe I don’t and it’s just her.

“Who Tay?” I take a deep breath before pushing the remaining space between us close. She was still beneath my lips, so I pulled away and kept my eyes off her.

“You Sel.” I whisper with my eyes still closed.

There’s a long silence between us before she slowly backs away from me.

“M-me?” I feel the tears slip down m cheeks as I nod.

“I-I’m sorry Taylor, I love-“

“Demi I know, but you asked what was bothering me.” I hugged my arms closer and kept my eyes off hers as I bit my lip to try and stop the tears.

“I’m sorry Tay.”

I can’t believe I was naïve enough to believe I could ever have a chance with her. I knew I wouldn’t be her prince that would sweep her off her feet, and lead her up the stairwell. This isn’t a fairytale, and I can’t be a dreamer anymore I made my move and it cost me all I have.
